India’s domestic coal-based power plants ended the financial year with over 55 million tonnes of stock, a 16.1% increase from the previous year. With rising coal production and anticipated higher power demand due to a harsh summer, sufficient coal stocks are crucial for uninterrupted thermal power generation.

NTPC Ltd seeks global partners to indigenise pressurised water reactor technology and establish large-capacity nuclear power plants, targeting around 15 GW. This move aims to assess vendor base potential, with a prospect of a global tender subject to government approval, amid India’s plans for 100 GW capacity expansion and legal amendments.

Petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and LPG sales in March 2024 grew at a slower pace compared to the full year, with petrol seeing a 5.3% rise and diesel at 0.9%. Full year growth for petrol was 7.3% and 2% for diesel. Jet fuel and LPG also showed moderated increases.

JSW Energy has surpassed its FY25 target, reaching an installed generation capacity of 10.9 GW, exceeding the 10 GW goal. The company added 3.6 GW during FY25, with 1.3 GW from wind energy and 1.8 GW from KSK Mahanadi Power Ltd. JSW aims for 20 GW capacity by 2030, focusing on sustainable and reliable power for energy security.

NHPC will begin investment in the 750-MW Kuppa Pumped Storage Project in Gujarat during FY26, instead of FY25, with project work resuming soon. An agreement signed in March 2024 with GPCL involves an estimated investment of Rs 4,000 crore in the project.

India’s power consumption increased by 7 percent in March 2025 compared to March 2024, due to higher temperatures. Peak power demand also saw a rise, reaching 235.22 GW. The summer is expected to bring further increases in power demand due to hotter-than-usual temperatures and more heatwave days according to the Meteorological Department.

The US Department of Energy has approved Holtec International to transfer small modular reactor (SMR) technology to India, enabling the design and construction of nuclear reactors. Holtec will collaborate with Indian firms while adhering to US restrictions on technology transfer. This eases a key barrier in the Indo-US nuclear agreement from 2007.

NTPC Group reported a 4% rise in power generation, reaching 438.6 billion units for the financial year ending March 31. The group added 3,972 MW, bringing its total capacity to 80 GW. An additional 32 GW, including 15 GW of renewable energy, is under construction. NTPC aims for 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032, while exploring new business areas.

Several companies including NTPC, NPCIL, Tata Power, and Adani Power are scouting sites for nuclear plants to support the government’s vision of 100 GW nuclear power by 2047. Stakeholder consultations are underway for changes to laws allowing private sector participation. NTPC and others have identified potential sites, particularly in coastal states.
